At some point on our journey,
we have to stop and look in the mirror…

Zen Circle

Spirituality is at the heart of what I want to bring to the world and to my life. Another way to say that is that I try to live from a deep knowing of who I am, which is fundamentally the same as who we all are – vast, loving, and whole. If you are headed in a spiritual direction on your journey and would like support, let me know.

I have been a Zen practitioner for 15 years. I lived for six years at the San Francisco Zen Center, Green Gulch Zen Center, and Tassajara Zen Mountain Center. I ordained as a Zen priest in 2009 and I am now a Zen teacher, having received what’s called Dharma Transmission from Reverend Kosho McCall in 2013.
If you would like to work with me as a Zen teacher, here are a few ways…

  • I can support you on your individual spiritual path. This would normally look like meeting anywhere from once to monthly. Donation-based.
  • I can officiate rituals such as weddings, funerals, and rites of passage. My style is very non-denominational. I try to get a thorough sense of what you want and then give it to you in a way that’s authentic to me.
  • I can give meditation instruction or a talk influenced by Buddhist teachings to your group.

“With Jared’s help, planning our wedding felt like a seamless, stress-free, and simple process. He guided us into creating a ceremony that was a perfect expression of our love and commitment to one another. During the wedding itself, Jared helped everyone stay present in a heartfelt and honest celebration of our love.”

Kosho McCall

Former head of practice at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center and retired Abbot of the Austin Zen Center

“Jared Michaels is known for his skill, insight, caring, deep listening, and, above all, compassion.”

Susan O’Connell

President of the San Francisco Zen Center

“I think the most important thing I could say about Jared is that I trust him. His work is all about helping others understand what it takes to live life harmoniously, wisely, purposefully, and with great kindness.  And, best of all, he continues to study and refine this in himself.”
